The Lights And Colors In The Home

Light lets us see the world, and color makes it worth seeing. United these are the inherent basic properties of all art, all beauty, all of the natural world around us. When creating a space, understanding and paying attention to these properties can give you a set of powerful tools for controlling the environment in your home.

Light can make a room feel open and free. It can lend a sense of energy to a space, and make a room feel more exciting and vigorous. However if you have too much light in a room it can turn into glare, which can be painful, and cause headaches. Devices such as curtains, and shades, are designed to control the amount of sunlight that enters, while dimmer switches, and ambient lighting solutions will help to achieve the perfect amount of illumination for any situation.

It is of course important to look at more than just the amount of light in a space. Different shades of illumination will also affect the way colors appear in a space. Glare is one factor to consider, the nature of light shining on the space is another.

A white light, cast from particular bulbs, will tend to fill the space more with energy and illumination. The white translucence cuts down on glare, and also removes much of the red and amber hues that can often be found in the filaments. Clear bulbs on the other hand give a truer reflection of the space, with a cleaner, unfiltered light suffusing the room they are placed in.

Shadows also affect colors. Certain colors, when used in a dark corner, will give it a sinister look and feel while others will actually be relaxed. It’s important to play around with lighting effects in your home, in order to see for yourself how different illuminated situations affect the colors in the space.

Illumination and tone are two elements which will give you a lot of control over the space. It is important to use both effectively, when designing the interior of your home. Feel free to experiment, using color to give the space content, while letting light shine down and cast its own personality over the whole.
